In Vitro Efficacy Programs

In vitro is latin for 'in the glass' and refers to studies and research that are performed with microorganisms, cells or biological molecules outside their normal context. These studies are done in labware including test tubes, flasks, Petri dishes and microtiter plates. When research and studies are done using components of an organism that are isolated from their typical biological environment, the results are a more detailed and convenient analysis than can be done with a whole organism. However, the results may not be able to accurately predict the effects on a whole organism. In contrast, studies that are conducted 'in vivo' are conducted on live animals, humans and plants.

• In vitro fertilization allows spermatozoa to fertilize eggs in a culture dish and produce an embryo which can then be implanted into the uterus of a prospective mother.


• Polymerase chain reaction is a method for replication of specific DNA or RNA sequences in a test tube.


• In vitro diagnostics are routinely used for a wide variety of medical and veterinary laboratory tests that help in diagnosing diseases and in monitoring the clinical status of patients using blood, cells and tissues from the patient.
